After Work Golf @ Märkischer GC

We enjoyed the sunny wheather yesterday, playing our After-Work-Golf-Round at the Märkische Golfclub Potsdam. Ok, we we're the last people on the course, but was it really necessary to activate the watering system while were still playing? Anyway, it was good fun and the craneflys should be saturated with our blood as well!

Golf Style Files

Denim Golf Bags like this one from Evisu and other golf fashion items can be found in this months Easyjet onboard magazine. Fortunately for all non easyjet-flyers, there is also an online edition.

Not all must haves, but a nice way to see how golf fashion is not only about checquered pants anymore.

BMW International Open: all the action from Munich

And off we go with the BMW International Open 2005 at Golfclub Eichenried. You can follow everything on the official BMW Golfsport website, including the live scoring.
The starting field features seven players of the victorious Ryder Cup Team 2004. Defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez is teeing off as well as Padraig Harrington, Angel Cabrera, Luke Donald and also John Daly from the US.
The wheather forecast looks better than in the last couple of days, so hopefully the course will be able to recover from the heavy rain of the last days.

Make sure to check out the scorecardview of the leaderboard. Not only does it allow hole-by-hole-comparison of the players, some videos can be called directly from the scorecard, showing the shots of the individual player. Cool feature!

Esprit goes Golf

After already sponsoring the European Professional Development Tour, the fashion company Esprit now comes up with a TV magazine on Premiere starting September 2nd at 22:30.

The new TV format called 'Golf: Esprit Tee Time' is being broadcasted weekly for half an hour. Themes will be the introduction of golf locations and golf clubs, sport, showbiz and society celebrities will join host Guido Kellermann for a round of golf.

Let's just hope this one is more substantial than other attempts.

Golf TV weekly, week 34

Being one of the golf aficionados not owning a pay-tv-decoder, it is sometimes hard to find golf coverage on german television. So I am constantly browsing through the tv guides to find golf programs. Maybe some of you have the same problem, so I thought it might be useful to share my weekly program guide with you. I'll send out updates every monday from now on.

So, this weeks program is:

22:30 - 23:00, "Living Golf" on CNN

11:30 - 12:00, "Spirit of Golf" on BBC World reports on Robert Trent Jones II, one of the greatest ever Golf Course Designers

17:30 - 18:00, "Abschlag" on n-tv

Please note that all pay tv-programs are not included here. Sadly, no other program covers the PGA Championship except Premiere, so there is no golf on Eurosport on Wednesday. More to come next week.

Live: USPGA final round

As the PGA Championship had to be postponed until today, the finishing holes get very exciting, as three players share now a narrow lead at three under par. Follow the live updates at BBC SPORT.

Addition: Congratulations Phil Mickelson! A birdie on the 18th and he wins his second major, you cannot think of a more dramatic finish, as Steve Elkington and Thomas Björn held onto their shared lead until the end. Mickelson, just one flight behind, claims victory with a brilliant up-and-down from the heavy greenside rough to win the 87th PGA Championship.

Office Golf

As golf is becoming more and more popular these days it is no longer the privilege of managers to have the putter in the office and to practice their golf whilst making big deals on the phone.

Maybe this is why Jabra, manufacturer of phone headsets, chose office golf as one of their subjects on their website:

Whether it makes sense to swing your driver in the office I'm not sure, maybe they are selling glass insurances too. Anyway, you'll find a nice manual to play office golf (PDF, 460 kB) on their website. Print it, cut it out, grab some colleagues and you are ready to go.

Should you prefer a more professional approach to office golf, feel free to order your professional office golf set for just EUR 1.799,00.

This set is offered by the Hannover agency Steindesign, they also founded their own office golf club, see some tv-coverage of their office tournaments here.

There even is a tournament series for office golf called the Glenlivet Office Putting Challenge, international finals were held in London this year in february.

Some more coverage on office putting can be found on the websites of ZDF and Manager Magazin.

2005 PGA Championship

The last major tournament is coming our way this week with the 2005 PGA Championship, taking place at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey (no, Homer Simpson will not be attending).

Defending champion Vijay Singh starts the first round on thursday at 1:30 pm with flight partners John Daly and Davis Love III. Tiger Woods - in pursuit of his third major title of the year - has an earlier start at 8:25 am, together with reigning U.S. Open Champion Michael Campbell and Greg 'The Shark' Norman. You can find the list of all first and second round Tee-Times here (PDF-File), the leaderboard will be shown here.

The PGA website also features a nice commented interactive tour with comments by the PGA Head Professional of Baltusrol GC, Doug Steffen. Also make sure to check out the video section of the website, featuring reviews of 2004, previews of this years tournament with defending champion Vijay Singh plus flyover videos from each hole of the lower course.

Addition: Greg Norman had to pull out of the competition due to back problems after his surgery earlier this year. Twice winner Larry Nelson and Argentine Angel Cabrera also withdrew through illness and a stomach problem.

Tiger vs. Golden Bear

I love statistics in golf, especially when they come with such neat graphs as the one above (borrowed from BBC UK). It belongs to this interesting article comparing Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

We had it about golf cart pimping before, but this is a little over the top:

After Work Golf @ GC Stolper Heide

Yesterday I played at the Golfclub Stolper Heide for the second time. Last year I played the West Course, designed by Bernhard Langer, which is the older one of the two 18-hole courses. And yesterday it was time for the East Course, designed by Kurt Roßknecht.

The course has a very pleasant layout and in combination with the perfect weather we enjoyed some entertaining nine holes of After Work Golf. Being the younger ones of the courses, the East Course doesn't offer the high tree population of the West Course, but the nicely placed water hazards and bunkers make it interesting to play (more pictures can be found here).

My game recovered pretty good from the mediocre play of last weekend, the woods had their comeback and I was able to shoot three pars and three bogeys. Not bad for a tuesday night ;-).

Micro Golf

Last year, 'Pit Green' won the prize for "Innovations in Sports Gear" at the Nike Play Awards. Meanwhile, the golf spin-off of good old Tipp-Kick is ready for the market, including smart packaging design and enjoyable communication.

How it works can be seen here (Quicktime Movie). Watch and buy at Christmas is coming faster than you think!
